Bluegrass Equine Surgery (BES) is an equine veterinary practice providing exceptional client service and primary medical care in the central Kentucky region. We are building a new, diverse, supportive, and driven team.
BES is seeking to fill the position of Administrative Assistant.
Title: Administrative Assistant
Reports to: Hospital Manager, Lead Ambulatory Doctor
Hours Per Week: 40 hours
Status: W2 Employee - Full Time
Standard Schedule: Monday-Friday
PetVet Paid Time Off: 6 Holidays annually plus 80 hours of PTO after 90 days; 120 hours after 5 years.

Responsibilities:
The Administrative Assistant will assist in all ambulatory doctors wants and needs, as well as support at primary back up to the Hospital Manager. You will perform a variety of administrative and supportive tasks and work to provide efficiency and organization for BES.
Responsibilities:
- Communicate with farms/clients to receive their sales list to prepare Coggins and EVA’s
- Draft Coggins papers and print blood tube labels
- Send Coggins ns EVA result to the farms and sales companies
- Draft and issue Federal Health Certifications within the United States and Canada and bill for them
- Draft and issue insurance reports for all doctors, including but not limited to foal insurance, general exams, etc.
- Draft and issue reports to assist doctors, such as breeding soundness certificates, death certificates, vaccine certificates, and send to clients, sales, etc.
- Link diagnostic requests to patient’s profile in the PMS system, including but not limited to x-rays, ultrasounds, Coggins, health certificates and lab results,
- Lab results and diagnostics are checked monthly for correct billing.
- Communicate with farms to obtain ownership of horses.
- Assist billing invoices for field doctors if needed.
- Track CE & Licenses for all veterinarians, communicating with them and making sure they are up to date
- Maintain and input employees’ hours through Dayforce.
- Help hospital manager with odds and ends tasks including but not limited to helping plan office events, calling vendors to come out to property for maintenance, etc.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Veterinary environment, terminology, and protocols
- Working in a team environment
- Customer Service
- Handling multiple tasks and priorities
- Organization skills
- Attention to detail
- Verbal and written communication skills with good interpersonal skills
- Basic math skills
- Familiarity with EzyVet, FileMaker, and Microsoft programs strongly preferred

BESC is seeking to immediately fill the position of Equine Anesthesia Technician.
Hours: Tuesday-Friday 7AM to 5PM
Reports to: Lead In-House Surgical Tech, Surgeon
Department: Surgery
Location: Hospital
Compensation: Hourly
The BESC In-House Surgical Tech assists the doctors with surgery.
DUTIES
- General
- Maintain clean surgery environment
- Model professionalism and ethical practices
- Medical
- Properly begin standard procedures according to doctor’s preference
- Clean wrap and sterilize packs
- Fill out surgery forms and anesthesia forms during surgery
- Calculate tranquilization
- Tranquilize surgery patients and place IV catheters
- Help with setup for surgery and positioning of patient for surgery
- Intubate patients, attach to monitor, and control the anesthesia machine
- Monitor patient during surgery
- Log controlled drugs
- Perform maintenance of anesthesia machine
- Take vital measurements on patients
- Other

BES is seeking to immediately fill the position of Seasonal Equine Ambulatory Veterinary Technician.
Hours: Seasonal, 40 hours/weekly. Monday-Friday.
Reports to: Assigned doctor, Hospital Manager
Department: Field
Location: Field, varies
Compensation: Hourly, based on experience, overtime expected during busy seasons
The BES Seasonal Equine Ambulatory Veterinary Technician accompanies and assists the doctors with all aspects of patient care in the field, helping handle horses, pull up medicines, drive, bill, and stock trucks.
DUTIES
General
- Assist in daily procedures such as ultrasounds, foal work, radiographs, emergencies, and sales work.
- Communicate with other doctors and administrative staff.
- Willingness to be flexible on schedule.
- Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions.
- Comfortable driving an SUV on Kentucky backroads.
- Comfortable with technology and creating bills on tablets and writing paper tickets.
Medical
- Stock trucks according to doctor preference
- Break down trucks at the end of the day
- Work well with others and present yourself professionally in front of clients
- Handle and restrain horses for procedures
- Assist with euthanizing
- Assist in emergencies (colic, lacerations, etc.)
- Gather proper information for Coggins, fill out forms, take pictures, identify markings
Other
- Model professionalism and ethical practices
EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrate understanding of equine veterinary practices
- Ability to read horse body language and perform advanced handling of horses and foals

- Prefer 1 year of equine technician experience

The BES Barn/Recovery Tech assists the patient with all aspects of surgical recovery.
DUTIES
Medical
- Assist in appointments or drop-offs
- Admit and discharge patients
- Monitor hospitalized and surgery patients
- Monitor all post-op meds and bandaging
- Communicate with Surgery Ops Manager, HM, doctors
- Restrain patients as needed
- Take vital measurements on patients
- Assist in dropping/recovering horses from anesthesia
- Load and unload horses/patients from trailer
- Interact with clients at drop off/pick up
- Take patients outside when needed, jog horses for lameness exams
- Assist holding and plating for x-rays
- Hold and restrain horses in scintigraphy barn
- Clean stalls, hay and water horses routinely
- Help keep barn and surgery area clean
- Model professionalism and ethical practices

The BES Surgery Technician assists with all aspects of surgical day operations and field operations. Assist within the hospital and out on the farms to complete surgical day in a safe, efficient, and productive way.
DUTIES
- Assist in keeping Surgery and Procedures a clean and safe environment.
- Assist during surgery as needed.
- Plate and shoot for radiographs.
- Assist in lameness exams.
- Scrub and sterilize specified locations on a horse prior to surgical work.
- Sterilize and pack surgical equipment.
- Help keep surgical unit clean and organized.
- Help keep surgical truck stocked and organized.
- Assist with the care of patients.
- Assist with admission and discharge of patients.
- Assist with monitoring and caring for patients.
- Assist in moving patients to and from procedures as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Flexibility with ones schedule.
EXPERIENCE

Equine Surgical Internship – Bluegrass Equine Surgery
Lexington, Kentucky
Bluegrass Equine Surgery, located just outside of Lexington, Kentucky, is a specialty equine referral hospital providing comprehensive surgical and medical care to equine patients. Established with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care and client service, the practice serves both local and international clients and provides ambulatory services to many of the region’s premier Thoroughbred farms. Our hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, supporting a full spectrum of equine health care throughout all stages of life.
Program Description
In response to the evolving demands of the equine industry, Bluegrass Equine Surgery has established a structured Equine Surgical Internship Program. The program is designed to provide interns with extensive clinical training and practical experience in equine surgery and related disciplines. Interns will gain direct exposure to case management under the supervision of board-certified specialists, with the goal of preparing them for residency training or advanced clinical practice.
Clinical Rotations
- Surgery: 13 weeks
- Radiology & Imaging: 10 weeks
- Anesthesia: 5 weeks
- Lameness: 10 weeks
Eligibility Requirements
- Candidates must be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the United States.
- Please note that visa sponsorship is not available for graduates who are not license-eligible.
